英語の物語
最初は日本語を見ず、分からない部分だけ開いてみましょう。A man in a dark coat visited the community hall every afternoon. Each exit was checked, and every door was locked again. Aya, Ken, and Hana watched him from beside the notice board.
“He is probably a safety inspector,” Ken said. The manager agreed. “The hall was inspected last month. Still, another careful check will not hurt.”
At 7:13, the man stopped in front of a green door. A sign said KEEP CLOSED. The door was not used by visitors, but a thin blue light showed under it.
The man took out a white glove and touched the handle. Aya stepped forward. “If it is not for visitors, why are you opening it?” she asked.
The man did not answer. Ken called the manager, and Hana stood between him and the door. After a long silence, the man put the glove away and left through the normal entrance.
The manager blamed an old electrical panel for the blue light. The explanation sounded possible, so everyone went home. Later, the KEEP CLOSED sign was found on the other side of the door.

lock の動作を受ける door が主語。was + 過去分詞で過去の受動態です。
in front of
〜の前でThe man stopped in front of a green door.男は緑のドアの前で止まりました。
場所を表す基本表現。in front of の後ろに人・物を置きます。
step forward
前へ出るAya stepped forward.アヤは前へ出ました。
step は「一歩進む」。勇気を出して前へ出る場面にも使えます。
on the other side
反対側にThe sign was found on the other side.看板は反対側で見つかりました。
other side は二つの面・場所のうちのもう一方。ドアや壁の反対側を表します。

本文の一文を使って、形と使い方を整理します。受動態で点検される物を主語にする
Each exit was checked, and every door was locked again.それぞれの出口が確認され、すべてのドアに再び鍵がかけられました。主語 + was / were + 過去分詞
点検する人より、点検を受けた出口に焦点を置く表現です。each + 単数名詞は文法上単数として扱うため、was を使います。
- The windows were closed before the storm.嵐の前に窓が閉められました。
受動態では動作主を省略できる
The hall was inspected last month.公民館は先月点検されました。主語 + be動詞 + 過去分詞 (+ by + 人)
誰が点検したかが重要でない、または分からない時は、受動態の by + 人を省略できます。動作主を示す必要がある時だけ by を加えます。
