The False Translation

Two days later, a messenger from the Archive reached Aldern. A storm was moving toward Calder's Ford, a town built beside a river. The town's old water gates had not been tested in years, and the Archive needed a Reader at once.

The messenger's name was Kade. “Your work at the tower reached the Archive,” he said to Ren. “They believe you can read fast and correctly. I hope that is true today.” Ren felt proud, and a little afraid.

At Calder's Ford, dark clouds already covered the sky. Two stone gates stood beside the river: Gate A near the reservoir, and Gate B near the town square. Townspeople waited nervously, holding buckets and boards.

Words glowed on the control panel: CLOSE GATE B BEFORE GATE A. Thunder rolled in the distance. “Tell us now,” Kade said. “Which gate closes first?” Ren's hands felt cold.

He looked at the map. Gate B stood closer to them; Gate A stood farther away, near the reservoir. “Before can mean in front of,” Ren thought quickly. “Gate B is in front of Gate A. Maybe that is what it means.” He said, “Close Gate A first.”

Workers closed Gate A. Almost at once, water that should have flowed into the reservoir rushed down the lower canal instead. It reached the town square within minutes, faster and higher than anyone expected.

“Something is wrong!” Mira shouted. She ran toward Gate B with two townspeople. The gate was heavy and old, and it would not move easily. Water was already rising around their boots.

Together, they forced Gate B closed just as the water reached the market stalls. Tables and baskets floated for a moment, then settled in shallow water. No one was hurt, but half the square was flooded.

Kade looked at the wet square, then at Ren. “You told us to close Gate A first,” he said. “You were wrong.” Ren could not argue. “I was,” he answered quietly. “I should have read the sentence again before I spoke.”

Later, Mira found Ren sitting alone by the wet square. “I do not trust you less because you made a mistake,” she said. “I would trust you less if you had hidden that you were not sure.” Ren said nothing, but he listened carefully.

That evening, Kade returned with new orders. “The Archive wants a full team to enter a sunken city under Lake Verrin,” he said. “I will go with you this time.” He did not smile, but he did not refuse to bring Ren, either.
