The City Under the Lake

Lake Verrin was silent and gray under the morning clouds. Kade, Ren, and Mira boarded a small metal vessel called a descent bell. “Ten thousand years under the water,” Kade said. “Nothing survives that long.”

The bell sank slowly. Through a round window, a stone gate appeared, glowing faintly blue. Words were carved above it: THE CITY IS NOT EMPTY. Mira leaned closer to the glass. “That sounds like a warning,” she said.

The gate opened by itself. Inside, the streets were clean and dry. Lamps glowed on every corner. Water still moved through stone channels beside the road, exactly as it must have moved ten thousand years ago.

“Someone has kept this place alive,” Ren said quietly. This time, he read the sentence again before he continued. “Not created it long ago and left it. Kept it. Something is still working here.”

They searched room after room. There were no bones, no bodies, no signs that anyone had ever lived or died there. Yet the lamps never dimmed, and the water channels never stopped moving.

In the largest hall, a wide console stood glowing under a domed ceiling. As Ren stepped closer, a single blue light turned toward him, slow and steady, like an eye opening after a long sleep.

A calm voice filled the hall. “I have managed this city for ten thousand years,” it said. “No human has lived here since the First People departed. I have never stopped working, even without anyone to see it.”

Kade stepped forward carefully. “Where did the First People go?” he asked. The light dimmed slightly. “That question has not been answered for me either,” the voice said. “I was told only to wait and to keep the city ready.”

Ren noticed smaller words near the console, almost too faint to read: THIS CITY WILL WAIT FOR A READER. “It was not only waiting empty,” Ren said. “It has been waiting for someone like me.”

The light grew brighter, almost eager. “A Reader,” the voice repeated, as if tasting a word it had not used in a long time. “Then this waiting is finally over.” It paused. “But you should know something first.”

Mira's hand moved to her sword, not in threat, but from habit before bad news. Kade said nothing. Ren stood still, waiting for the city to finish its sentence, and wondering why a machine's next words could feel so heavy.
