The Voice of the First People

The blue light held steady. “You are late,” the voice finally said. The words hung in the air. Ren felt his chest tighten. “Late for what?” he asked carefully.

“We expected a Reader within one hundred years,” the voice said. “Ten thousand years have already passed. I have waited for someone like you far longer than I was designed to wait.”

“Then the First People did not simply disappear,” Kade said slowly. “They planned to leave.” The light dimmed, as if choosing its next words with care. “Yes,” it answered. “They left on purpose.”

“Why?” Mira asked directly. “They saw a danger they could not stop with their own hands,” the voice said. “So they hid solutions inside relics across the world, and left this city to wait for someone who could read them.”

A map of light appeared above the console. Small red marks blinked across it, one after another. “These marks show the red storms,” the voice explained. “They have grown more frequent every generation since the First People left.”

Ren stared at the map. Dozens of marks covered the later years; only a few appeared near the start. “It is not random weather,” he said quietly. “It has been getting worse this whole time, and almost no one has known why.”

“How many relics like this exist?” Ren asked. “More than I have ever counted,” the voice answered. “Most have never met a Reader. Most are still waiting, exactly as I have waited.” Ren felt the weight of every silent relic in the world.

“Where should we look next?” Kade asked. “The final instructions were kept in a deeper archive,” the voice said. “Even your Archive may not fully know it exists. I cannot promise it has not been hidden from you as well.”

Kade's face did not change, but his hands closed slowly into fists. He said nothing about his own organization keeping secrets from him. Mira noticed and said nothing either, giving him a moment to think.

“We will report this to the Archive,” Kade finally said. “All of it. If something has been hidden, I want to know who hid it and why.” Ren looked at him with new respect. Not every truth is easy to ask for.

As they turned to leave, the voice spoke once more, softer than before. “You are still late,” it said, “but you came. For ten thousand years, that was the only part I was not sure would ever be true.”
