Archive Zero

The Archive's headquarters stood on a cliff above the capital. Kade led Ren and Mira through familiar halls, then stopped before a plain door with no handle. “I have worked here for six years,” he said. “I have never seen this door before.”

Words were carved into the stone frame: THIS ROOM MUST NOT BE OPENED WITHOUT AUTHORIZATION. “Every door in this building says that,” Kade said. “But this hallway is not on any map I have used.”

Mira found a second, smaller line below it, almost hidden by dust: ARCHIVE ZERO — CLEARANCE NINE ONLY. “Nine,” she repeated. “How many clearance levels does this place have?”

“Five,” Kade said flatly. “I hold level three. No one I know has ever mentioned level nine.” His voice was calm, but his hand rested on the door as if he needed to prove to himself that it was real.

Ren read the deeper marks around the frame. “This door was not built to keep enemies out,” he said slowly. “It was built to keep something secret from the Archive's own people. That is different.”

The door opened at Ren's touch, without asking for any clearance at all. Inside, shelves held hundreds of relics, each labeled with a single word: DANGEROUS, UNSTABLE, or simply DO NOT TRANSLATE.

“A Reader has always been allowed to open this room,” Ren realized. “Not because the Archive trusts Readers completely, but because a Reader is the only one who can tell what is truly dangerous here.”

At the back of the room, one relic stood apart from the rest: a small silver key, engraved with THE DOOR TO EARTH REMAINS SEALED. Mira went very still. “Earth,” she said quietly. “Your world, Ren.”

“The Archive has known about this since before I was born,” Kade said, his voice tight. “They kept it a secret, even from senior officers. I do not know if I can still call this organization trustworthy.”

Ren picked up the key carefully. It was warm, almost alive in his hand. “I did not come to this world to find a way home,” he said. “But now that a door might exist, I cannot pretend I do not want to know more.”

Mira placed her hand over his, not to take the key, but to steady it. “Whatever you decide,” she said, “you will not read that door alone.” For the first time in a long while, Ren did not feel late. He felt, simply, not alone.
