The Door to Earth

The key led them down a spiral stairway that no map recorded. At the bottom stood a door made of dark metal, taller than three people. It hummed quietly, as if something breathed on the other side.

Ren read the words across its surface aloud: IF THIS DOOR OPENS, BOTH WORLDS MIGHT SHARE ONE STORM. He read it a second time, slower, making sure each word matched what he had first understood.

“Might, not will,” Ren explained to Mira and Kade. “It does not promise disaster. But it also does not promise safety. If is a real condition here, not a small worry.” No one spoke for a moment.

“If we open it, you could return home,” Kade said carefully. “But the Archive exists to prevent exactly this kind of risk. My duty says we should keep it sealed.” He did not sound certain, only honest.

Ren thought of small things from Earth: a train station, a familiar street, a voice he had not heard in a long time. For a moment, wanting to go home felt larger than anything else in the room.

Then he found older records beside the door. Long ago, a different door like this one had opened for a short time. The record did not describe a disaster, but it showed a single new mark on the red storm map, far earlier than expected.

“It might not cause a storm by itself,” Ren said quietly. “But it might make the next one come sooner. I do not know enough yet to be sure which world would pay for that.” His voice was steady, even though his hands were not.

“I want to go home,” Ren said at last. “I have wanted that since the first day I woke up here. But I do not want to choose it with a sentence I have only understood halfway.” He stepped back from the door.

Mira let out a breath she seemed to have been holding. “Then we keep it sealed,” she said, “until you understand every word of that sentence, and every word of what caused the mark on that old map.”

Kade sealed the door again, this time recording both his signature and Ren's beside it. “Not hidden this time,” he said. “Chosen. There is a difference.” Ren kept the small silver key. He did not throw it away, and he did not use it.

Outside, the sky over the capital was clear for the first time in weeks. Ren looked toward the horizon, not back at the sealed door. “There are still relics all over this world waiting for someone to read them,” he said. “Let's go find the next one.”
