The Man Who Never Forgets

Feld's house stood alone at the edge of the fields. Inside, there was little furniture and no pictures on the walls. “I stopped collecting things,” he said, before Ren could ask.

He took a small glass object from a wooden box. It was no bigger than an egg and glowed faintly. “This belonged to my daughter, Sela,” he said quietly. “She died six years ago.”

Feld touched the glass with one finger. For three seconds, a small light showed a girl laughing beside a river. Then the light disappeared. “That is all I have left,” he said. “Three seconds.”

Ren found tiny words on the base of the glass: NEW MEMORIES WILL REPLACE OLD ONES. “What does it mean?” Mira asked. Ren read it aloud, and Feld's face grew pale.

“I have always believed that,” Feld said. “If I make new memories, I will lose this one. So I stopped visiting friends. I stopped planting new trees. I stopped remembering anything, in case it pushed her away.”

Mira looked closely at the glass. A thin crack ran across one side. “This is old,” she said. “It looks weaker than it did years ago, doesn't it?” Feld did not answer, but his hands shook slightly.

Ren studied the sentence again. “It says memories, not you,” he said slowly. “The glass can hold new memories. It never says anything about the rest of your life.” Feld looked up for the first time.

“You forgot one thing,” Mira added. “The crack is already there. This memory is fading with time, whether you touch the glass or not. Waiting will not save it.” Her voice was steady, not unkind.

Feld held the glass for a long time. “I remembered her by never changing,” he said. “Maybe that was never remembering her at all. Maybe it was only remembering my own fear.” No one spoke for a while.

That night, Feld placed the glass back in its box without touching it again. Outside, he picked up a small shovel. “I will plant one tree tomorrow,” he told them. “Just one. Sela liked trees by the river.”

Before Ren and Mira left, Feld told them one more thing. “I saw a red storm once, five years ago, from the eastern mountains,” he said. “It stayed for one hour and killed every crop it touched. I hope you never see it closer than that.”
