Why the First People Built the Doors

The extra night passed quietly. In the morning, Ren returned to the Keeper alone, before Mira and Kade woke. “I have one question left,” he said. “Why doors, specifically? Why not something simpler?”

The Keeper's light brightened slightly, as if pleased by the question. “The doors were built in order to buy the world more time, not to save it forever,” it said. “A door can be opened carefully, in small amounts. A wall cannot.”

Ren thought of the reservoir gates at Calder's Ford. “In order to release pressure safely,” he said slowly, “you do not remove the whole wall. You open one gate, carefully, and close it again.” The Keeper's light pulsed once, like a nod.

“Each door in this world was placed in order to let a small, controlled amount of the wound's pressure escape,” the Keeper explained. “Never enough to close it. Only enough to keep it from tearing further, for a while.”

Mira arrived, having heard the last part. “So every relic we have read,” she said, “was not a solution. It was a valve.” “Yes,” the Keeper said simply. “In order to survive one more generation, the First People chose patience over a cure they did not have.”

Kade joined them, and the Keeper continued. “I was built in order to manage exactly this kind of patience,” it said. “Not to end the wound, but to keep track of how much time each generation had left to try.”

“Then CLOSE was never part of the original plan,” Ren said slowly. “Correct,” the Keeper answered. “CLOSE was added later, by people desperate enough to try something no one had designed in order to succeed. Only in order to stop trying anything else.”

Kade's jaw tightened. “So choosing CLOSE means choosing something built in order to give up, not in order to win.” “I would not use those words,” the Keeper said gently, “but I would not correct them either.”

Ren asked one more thing. “In order to make DELAY or SHARE meaningful now,” he said, “what would need to change from ten thousand years ago?” The Keeper's light dimmed thoughtfully. “A Reader who understands why patience was chosen,” it said, “not only that it was.”

Mira looked at Ren carefully. “That sounds like you,” she said. Ren did not answer immediately. “I came here in order to survive one accident at a train station,” he said finally. “I never planned to become someone the world's patience depended on.”

Kade placed a hand briefly on Ren's shoulder, an unfamiliar gesture from him. “In order to carry something this heavy,” he said, “you should not have to carry it entirely alone.” Mira added nothing; her presence beside them said enough.
