The Keeper's Bargain

On the third morning in the vault, a faint light rose from the floor between the three small relics. It did not look like the console in the sunken city; it looked almost human, though its edges stayed soft and unfinished.

“I am called the Keeper,” it said, its voice softer than the city's had been. “I stayed behind so that someone would remain to answer, as long as anyone still asked.” Kade's hand went briefly to his sword hilt, then relaxed.

“As long as one of you remains, I will continue to wait,” the Keeper said. “But I cannot decide for you. That was never permitted, even to me.” Ren asked, “Permitted by whom?” The Keeper paused. “By the same people who made me.”

Mira studied the shifting light closely. “Are you a person?” she asked directly. “I was, once,” the Keeper answered. “As long as this vault needed watching, I agreed to become something else instead.”

Ren asked about DELAY, SHARE, and CLOSE. “Explain them plainly,” he said. “As long as you want an honest answer,” the Keeper replied, “I will give one, even if it does not comfort you.”

“DELAY means sealing every known door again, buying time but changing nothing,” the Keeper said. “SHARE means opening a controlled path so the storm's pressure spreads slowly across more places, instead of building in one. CLOSE means attempting to end the wound completely, at a cost none of us have ever measured.”

“As long as no one chooses CLOSE,” the Keeper added, “the wound continues, slowly worsening, exactly as it has for ten thousand years. As long as someone does, the outcome has never once been tested to its end.” No one spoke for a long moment.

“Why give us this choice at all,” Kade asked, “if even you do not know the ending?” The Keeper's light dimmed. “Because, as long as it remained only my choice,” it said, “I chose nothing, for ten thousand years. That was its own kind of ending.”

Ren felt the weight of that answer settle over him. “As long as we understand what each word truly costs,” he said slowly, “I think we are ready to choose separately, exactly as the stones asked.” Mira and Kade both nodded, none of them entirely certain.

“Before you do,” the Keeper said, “know that as long as this vault exists, it will remember whichever word each of you chooses, forever, without judgment.” It was, Ren realized, trying to offer comfort in the only language it had left.

The three relics — DELAY, SHARE, CLOSE — waited on the stone table, unchanged, patient in a way only very old things could be. Ren picked up none of them yet. “Give us one more night,” he told the Keeper. “As long as you can spare it.”
