The Vault Beneath the Vault

They climbed the mountain again, slower than before, each carrying the weight of what they now understood. At the three stones, Ren noticed something he had missed the first time: a thin seam in the floor, shaped like a fourth stone waiting to rise.

Words appeared along the seam, faint until Ren knelt close: BY THE TIME YOU READ THIS, THE FIRST DOOR WILL HAVE ALREADY CHOSEN FOR YOU. He read it twice before speaking. “I do not think that means what it sounds like,” he said carefully.

Kade tensed. “Are you saying the choice has already been made without us?” “No,” Ren said. “By the time is about a point in time, not about who decides. It means: before you finish reading, the door has already been choosing, quietly, based on how you three have acted.”

Mira frowned. “So it has been watching us since we arrived the first time?” “Maybe longer,” Ren said. “By the time we found the sleeping machine, the door may have already begun deciding whether we were the ones it needed.”

The seam widened slowly, and a section of the floor descended like a slow elevator, revealing a spiral stair no map had ever shown. Kade checked his compass out of habit, though he no longer expected it to help.

At the bottom, a vault far larger than Archive Zero opened before them: shelves reaching higher than any ceiling should allow, each holding a single relic wrapped in cloth. A small sign near the entrance read: BY THE TIME THE FIRST PEOPLE LEFT, THIS PLACE HELD EVERYTHING THEY COULD NOT CARRY.

“Everything they could not carry,” Mira repeated. “Not everything they wanted to hide. That is a different kind of leaving.” Ren nodded. “By the time they departed,” he said, “they were not escaping. They were running out of time to pack.”

Kade found a relic labeled differently from the rest: FINAL INSTRUCTIONS. BY THE TIME YOU FIND THIS, WE HAD ALREADY FAILED TO FINISH THEM OURSELVES. “They admit it,” he said quietly. “Right at the start.”

Ren unwrapped it slowly. Inside was not a single relic, but three smaller ones, each engraved with a different word: DELAY, SHARE, CLOSE. “Not one instruction,” he said. “Three. And I think we are meant to choose which one, separately, exactly as the stones said.”

Mira picked up CLOSE and turned it over. “By the time we choose,” she said slowly, “the First People will have been gone for ten thousand years, and we will still be finishing their sentence.” No one found that comforting, but no one disagreed either.

Kade set DELAY, SHARE, and CLOSE side by side on a stone table. “We should not choose tonight,” he said. “By the time we understand each word fully, I would rather we were tired from thinking too long than from thinking too little.”
