Two Storms, One Cause

Back at the Archive, Ren spent two full days inside the records hall, reading weather logs that no one had opened in decades. Voss allowed it without asking why. Kade brought him tea he mostly forgot to drink.

Most entries described the red storm the way farmers always had: color, wind speed, damage to crops. But one older entry, half-erased, used different language entirely: THE STORM IS NOT ONLY WEATHER, BUT ALSO A WOUND THAT HAS NOT CLOSED.

Ren brought the page to Mira. “Not only weather, but also a wound,” he read. “A wound in what?” Mira frowned. “A wound doesn't blow crops down,” she said. “Unless it isn't only a wound in the ground.”

Kade cross-referenced the entry against Archive Zero's oldest relic labels. He found a matching phrase on a relic marked simply UNSTABLE: NOT ONLY A CRACK BETWEEN WORLDS, BUT ALSO A CRACK THAT REMEMBERS BEING OPENED.

“A crack that remembers,” Ren repeated slowly. “Not only physical damage, but also something like... memory. Like Feld's glass.” Mira's eyes widened slightly. “You think the storm is not only breaking something,” she said, “but also repeating something?”

Ren nodded slowly. “Every time the storm grows worse, it is not only weather changing,” he said. “It is also the same old wound reopening, a little wider each time, because something keeps touching it.”

Kade set down the relic carefully. “Then every door we have found,” he said, “is not only a location on a map, but also, possibly, a place where the wound was touched before.” Ren thought of the Earth door, still sealed, still waiting.

“If that is true,” Ren said carefully, “then opening the Earth door would not only risk a new storm. It would also touch a wound that is already close to reopening on its own.” The room felt colder than it had a moment before.

Mira asked the question none of them wanted to say aloud. “So the mountain's stones,” she said, “are not only asking us to choose carefully. They are also asking us not to make the wound worse while we decide.” Ren had no comforting answer.

Voss joined them quietly near the end of the second day. She had not been invited, but no one asked her to leave. “I used to think the storm was simply nature being unkind,” she said. “I no longer have that comfort.”

Ren gathered every page into one careful stack. “We are not only looking for a way to seal a door anymore,” he said. “We are also looking for a way to let something old finally stop hurting.” No one disagreed, and no one felt ready.
