The Storm Moves Early

On the fourth day, Sana's granddaughter arrived at the vault entrance, out of breath. She had run most of the way from the base of the mountain. “The sky,” she gasped. “It's turning red. Early. Much too early.”

Kade checked the old records immediately. According to every pattern Sana had tracked, the next storm was not expected for another two years. “This should not be happening yet,” he said, his calm slipping for the first time.

The Keeper's light flared brighter than they had seen it. “You had better decide before the next storm arrives, not after,” it said. “Had better is not a suggestion this time. It is the last honest warning I have left to give.”

Ren asked why the storm had come early. The Keeper dimmed with what looked almost like guilt. “Every question we asked, every door we opened to learn, touched the wound a little,” it said. “You had better know that searching for the answer was never free.”

Mira's face hardened. “So by coming here, by asking, we made this worse.” “A little,” the Keeper admitted. “You had better not blame yourselves entirely, though. The wound was already close to reopening, exactly as the old records said.”

Kade ran calculations with shaking hands. “If the pattern holds,” he said, “we had better assume days, not months. Possibly less.” No one asked him to be more exact; his voice already carried the answer.

Ren looked at DELAY, SHARE, and CLOSE, still waiting untouched on the stone table. “We had better not choose out of panic,” he said, echoing Sana's mother's note without meaning to. Kade caught the echo and nodded slowly.

“You had better talk to Voss before anything else,” Kade said. “If the Archive does not know how little time remains, they had better learn it from us, not from the sky itself.” He was already writing a message as he spoke.

Mira placed a hand on Ren's arm. “You had better rest tonight,” she said gently, “even if only for a few hours. A tired Reader misreads sentences he would otherwise understand perfectly.” Ren wanted to argue, but he knew she was right.

That night, the western sky glowed a deep, restless red, closer than any of them had ever stood to it. The Keeper's light stayed on, quietly, watching with them. “You had better decide by morning,” it said once more, softly this time.

Kade's message to Voss went out before midnight. Her reply came faster than any answer had in weeks: three words only. “I trust you.” Ren read them aloud once, then folded the paper carefully, as if it might help him decide.
