What Ren Would Rather Choose

Morning came grey and heavy. The three relics still lay untouched on the stone table. Mira spoke first. “I would rather choose SHARE,” she said. “I would rather spread a burden than protect one place at the cost of another.”

Kade spoke next, more slowly. “I would rather choose DELAY,” he said. “Not because I am afraid of SHARE or CLOSE, but because the Archive needs time to prepare people, honestly this time, before anything larger happens.”

Both looked at Ren. He did not answer immediately. “I would rather choose what I understand,” he said finally, “than what would make either of you feel better right now. And I do not fully understand any of these three words yet.”

The Keeper's light shifted toward him. “That is precisely what the relic phrase means,” it said. “A Reader would rather choose what he understands than what would make everyone comfortable. You are reading it correctly, simply by refusing to guess.”

“Then what would you rather I do?” Ren asked directly. “I would rather tell you nothing further,” the Keeper said. “Not out of cruelty. Because the one thing I have learned in ten thousand years is that understanding borrowed from someone else does not hold in a storm.”

Ren walked slowly around the table, reading each relic's word aloud once more: DELAY. SHARE. CLOSE. “I would rather ask a different question first,” he said. “Not which word, but what all three assume that might not be true.”

Mira tilted her head. “Which assumption?” Ren pointed at all three words in turn. “Each one assumes the choice happens once, and stays fixed forever,” he said. “I would rather choose knowing we could choose again, than choose believing this is final.”

The Keeper's light held very still, as if genuinely surprised. “No Reader has asked that in ten thousand years,” it admitted. “I would rather answer honestly: I do not know if the choice can be repeated. I only know no one before you doubted that it could not.”

Kade leaned forward. “If no one ever doubted it, that is not proof it is true,” he said. “It is only proof no one asked, exactly as Ren keeps finding.” Mira nodded slowly, something like hope returning to her face.

Ren picked up all three relics at once, one in each hand and the third balanced between them. “I would rather choose SHARE today,” he said slowly, “not as a final answer, but as the first honest attempt at one, in a world where trying again might still be possible.”

Mira and Kade said nothing for a moment, then both reached out and placed their hands over his, over SHARE. “Then we would rather choose it together, this once,” Mira said, “even though the stones asked us to choose alone.”
