If the Boundary Held

The Keeper guided them to a mechanism none of them had noticed before, hidden beneath the three reading stones: a wide ring of pale metal, connected by threads of light to every relic in the vault above.

“SHARE requires all three of you,” the Keeper explained. “Not because the ritual demands numbers, but because it demands agreement reached honestly, not agreement reached out of fear.” Ren understood, finally, why the stones had asked for separate choices first.

Words appeared on the ring as they stepped forward together: IF THE BOUNDARY HELD, IT WOULD NOT BE BECAUSE OF ONE PERSON ALONE. Ren read it and felt something loosen in his chest that he had been carrying since Archive Zero.

“If I were still only the person who woke up confused on a cold floor,” Ren said quietly, “I would not know how to read this correctly.” Mira placed her hand on the ring beside his. “You are not only that person anymore,” she said.

The ring brightened slowly, and light spread outward through the threads, into every relic above, and further still, toward every door they had ever read: the sleeping machine, the tower at Aldern, the sunken city, the Earth door, still sealed.

Kade watched numbers shift on a small display near the ring. “The pressure is spreading,” he reported. “Slower in some places, faster in others. If this holds for even one season, Calder's Ford would not flood again this year.”

The Keeper's light dimmed, gentler than before. “If I were able to promise this will hold forever,” it said, “I would. I cannot. SHARE was never designed to be the final word, only the next honest sentence.”

Ren thought of Feld's cracked glass, of Toma's raised hammer, of Sana's fifty years of quiet drawing. “If every generation adds one honest sentence,” he said slowly, “maybe that was always the only plan that could have worked.”

Mira looked toward the vault entrance, toward the mountain path leading back down to the world. “If the boundary held even a little longer because of today,” she said, “I would rather spend tomorrow looking for the next relic than resting here.”

Kade folded away his calculations. “If Voss asks what we chose,” he said, “I would rather tell her the whole truth, including how close we came to choosing out of fear, than give her a version that sounds braver than it was.”

As they climbed back toward the surface, Ren looked once more at the small silver key, still resting in his pocket, the Earth door still sealed somewhere far away. “If this world needs me a little longer,” he said quietly, to no one in particular, “I think, for now, I would rather stay.”
