The Director's Silence

Three days passed after Kade sent his report. No answer came. On the fourth morning, a small brass plate beside the director's office caught Ren's eye. It read: THIS OFFICE USED TO ANSWER WITHIN ONE DAY.

“Used to,” Ren said quietly. “Not uses to. Something changed.” Kade stopped walking. “I never noticed that plate,” he said. “I have passed it a hundred times.”

Mira read Ren's face rather than the plate. “What does used to tell you that a normal past tense would not?” she asked. “It tells me this was a habit, repeated over time,” Ren answered. “And that it stopped. Recently, or long ago, I cannot say yet.”

The office door finally opened. Director Voss was an older woman with gray hair pulled back tightly. She did not stand to greet them. “You found Archive Zero,” she said. It was not a question.

“Why did it take three days to see us?” Kade asked, more directly than Ren had ever heard him speak to a superior. Voss did not look angry. “Because I used to know exactly what to say in moments like this,” she said. “I no longer do.”

She placed an old file on the desk. “I used to believe Archive Zero held only dangerous relics no one should touch,” she said. “I have since learned it also holds relics no one wanted the Archive itself to question.”

Ren opened the file. It listed names of directors going back generations, each one adding a single relic to Archive Zero, never removing one. “No one used to ask why,” Ren said slowly. “They only used to add.”

“I could have refused to show you this,” Voss said. “I used to think silence was the safer choice for this office. But you already opened that door once. I would rather you finish reading it with me than without me.”

Mira studied Voss carefully. “You are not stopping us,” she said. “No,” Voss agreed. “I am too old to keep believing that not knowing is the same as being safe.” For the first time, her voice sounded tired rather than formal.

Voss slid a second, thinner file across the desk. “This is everything my office used to keep about a place called the Deep Vault,” she said. “I do not know if it still exists. I only know we stopped looking for it two directors ago.”

Ren picked up the thinner file. Its cover bore words he had seen before, fainter but unmistakable: THE FINAL INSTRUCTIONS ARE KEPT WHERE THE FIRST DOOR STANDS. He looked up. “I think I know how to start,” he said.
