The Machine That Waits

The old file led them to a mountain three days north of the capital. No road reached the top, only a narrow path worn by animals rather than people. Kade checked his compass twice, unsure if the Archive's maps could still be trusted.

At the summit stood a single stone arch, half-buried in snow. It was smaller than Ren expected for something called “the first door.” Mira brushed away frost from its base. “No hinges,” she said. “It was never meant to open.”

Ren read the arch carefully. “IT WAS BUILT SO THAT NO ONE WOULD HAVE TO CHOOSE ALONE,” he said aloud. Kade frowned. “Choose what?” he asked. “The relic phrase doesn't say,” Ren admitted. “Only the reason it exists.”

Behind the arch, a narrow stairway descended into the mountain. Lamps lit automatically as they walked, each one dimming behind them. “This place expected visitors,” Mira noted. “Just not many at once.”

At the bottom, three separate reading stones stood in a triangle, each facing inward. Words appeared on all three, identical: EACH READER SEES THE SAME TRUTH ALONE, SO THAT NO SINGLE VOICE CAN CHANGE IT.

Ren stepped up to one stone. The words there were different from what he had just read aloud. “Wait,” he said slowly. “Mine says something else. It says the danger was never the red storm itself.”

Kade tried the second stone, though he could not read it himself; Ren read it for him afterward. “This one talks about a choice the First People almost made together, and did not,” Ren said. “So that no one would repeat it, they built this room so each Reader decides separately, without hearing the others first.”

Mira's stone showed only a single line, and Ren read it last: THE STORM GREW WORSE BECAUSE THEY CHOSE TOGETHER, TOO QUICKLY, TOO AFRAID TO DISAGREE. “They agreed on something,” Ren said quietly. “And agreeing was the mistake.”

Kade sat down slowly on the cold stone floor. “So this arch is not a door at all,” he said. “It is a warning built so that three people would never again decide something enormous out of fear, all at once.”

Ren looked between the three stones. “We are three people, standing in a room built for exactly this,” he said. “I do not think that is an accident.” Mira's hand found the hilt of her sword, not from fear, but from readiness.

A fourth message appeared, low on the central floor, meant for all three at once: WHEN YOU ARE READY TO CHOOSE SEPARATELY, THE NEXT DOOR WILL OPEN. Kade exhaled slowly. “Then I suppose we should each think carefully,” he said, “before any of us says a word.”
